Ulzi may be a bit of a weird word to hear at first, but it has incredible meaning behind it. Ulzi is the endless knot – stemming from Mongolian roots. It is the symbol of the interconnectedness of all beings on our planet. It represents community. It represents togetherness. It represents how – as people – we are interdependent on one another. We think that this knot is the perfect symbol for what we are trying to accomplish.
What makes Ulzi different than other safety apps?
Most other solutions can’t guarantee the police get your exact GPS location. In fact, they either use third party call centers or can only guarantee that police get within 3 football fields of you. But Ulzi uses a new interface in cooperation with every law enforcement dispatch center, getting them your exact GPS location right off the bat. In the meantime, trusted community responders can get to you even faster.
Ulzi does… a lot. What’s the core functionality?
Safety is not independent from the rest of your life. We don’t want Ulzi users to live their lives in fear that something might happen to them. We want to help give users the freedom to not worry, to have peace of mind, and to build a mindset and community that breeds safety. That is why we have built our core functionality around something you use daily and are familiar with already – mapping. We found that with other safety solutions, people often put them in their pocket and forget how to use them – simply because they don’t practice or familiarize themselves regularly with the interface. With Ulzi, you can navigate anywhere and be guided around traffic just like Google maps – but your trips will have safety built into every aspect. We can always monitor your safety so you don’t have to.
What is crowdsourced safety?
Crowdsourced safety began with a thought. Why don’t we apply the same rationale that goes into building public encyclopedias and use it to improve community safety? Eventually we decided that the way forward was by facilitating bystander intervention, giving you, the community member, unprecedented potential to help your loved ones and fellow community members. By engaging an entire community on as an indivdual and pointing them to the people that need their help, we hope to build a safer, more empathetic world.
The best safety solution is going to be one that is always with you. Ulzi leverages a technology that you already have in your pocket: your phone. In today’s world, everything is becoming accessible from our phones: concert tickets, boarding passes, email, social media, GPS, door locks, etc. So in order to be effective, Ulzi understands that the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe – is through a solution that is always by your side and a solution that you are the least likely to forget at home – unlike most bluetooth technologies.
I don’t ever feel unsafe, why should I get it?
Joining the Ulzi community isn’t just about protecting yourself, but responding to others as well. When you download and use the app, you are standing together with your community to make everyone safer. If someone nearby is in distress, Ulzi gives you the ability to help. Because the app works through crowdsourced safety, it will be the most useful when a large number of people in a single area have it.
I’m not worried about sexual assault but I am worried in other situations. When else can I use Ulzi?
Walking back from a late class or closing shift, especially in poorly-lit neighborhoods, is normal for students. But this can be a stressful or even frightening daily task, and constantly checking over your shoulder or crossing the street to avoid passing someone shouldn’t be normal. Use Ulzi to gain peace of mind and know that your friends can “virtually” walk you home safely, and help is always nearby.
Ulzi works for all types of situations that people don’t want to be in. If you are a parent whose child walks home alone from school every day, you can use Geozones to get a notification that your child has made it home safely. If you’re in a new place or feel uncomfortable while traveling, you can have the peace of mind that, if a situation were to escalate, your loved ones will know immediately and nearby community members can come to your aid.
